SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Provides assistance to the Education Service Officer in the management and administration of the Education Center's mission to provide educational programs to improve the competence of active duty Marines, assisting in their progression, and improving the caliber of education in the Marine Corps. Serves as an educational counselor for the MCCS Education Center. Provides primary sources of education information and counseling to military personnel, their dependents, and other personnel seeking assistance. Must travel to all Marine Corps Education Centers on Okinawa as needed.
Provides sound counseling to all military personnel, their family members and eligible civilians regarding educational and vocational opportunities. The incumbent performs all duties normally associated with Marine Corps Tuition Assistance (TA) and the Voluntary Education Program. By means of interviews, academic histories, review of transcripts, various test results, etc., assists students in establishing realistic goals, while active duty and post military, and enables students to come to know himself/herself, abilities, aptitudes, academic and vocational potentials, and possible routes to achievement of his/her goals. Counsels on completion of academic training from high school completion through graduate degrees. Assists personnel in making course and program choices and planning their educational roadmap. Counsels on the requirements and selection of various tests that are available and administered at the Education Center. Utilizes professional academic principles and techniques when counseling on all phases of the program. Provides unit educational briefs which will include all Voluntary Education Programs and Veteran's benefits.
Assists personnel in selecting appropriate career fields. Advises on educational requirements and methods of acquiring necessary skills or training. Through initial counseling, provides continuing assistance and encouragement to the individual in the attainment of these established goals.
Determines tuition assistance eligibility, advises on veterans affairs education programs and other grants, loans and scholarships. Clarifies Tuition Assistance policy for military students. Assists Marine Corps personnel with the processing of TA and course registration required by the institutions. Provides assistance to those requesting Veterans Administration educational benefits, and provides information to interested students regarding grants and loans available for educational purposes. Provides information about educational financial assistance to all military personnel and family members.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or related field is required.
- Master's Degree is highly preferred.
- Must have a minimum of three years experience in, or related to, higher education and/or career planning, direct advisement of students, employment services, curriculum design, and/or instructing.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of education principles and processes to help implement and administer educational programs and of the theories, principles, and techniques of education and training to provide educational advisement.
- Demonstrated ability to provide academic counseling to individuals from diverse backgrounds with a variety of educational goals.
- Knowledge of financial aid resources available to the military community.
- Ability to plan, organize, and facilitate workshops for both in classroom and online instruction and delivery.
- Able to conduct self-guided research to remain current and provide guidance on Marine Corps Orders, Department of Defense Directives, Veteran Affairs policies, college admission policies, educational guides and manuals, and education related military programs.
- Effective communication skills to assist in providing accurate information and assistance in a timely manner and to express oneself orally and in writing in a highly professional manner. Ability to compose written reports and materials clearly, concisely, and effectively, without error.
- Must be able to operate a personal computer, printer, etc., and have current knowledge in various office computer programs and software applications.
