Description About the Position: Serves as the Deputy Fire Chief. Works under the direct supervisor of the fire chief, who outlines policy, procedures, and objectives for the overall department.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) supervising or managing fire and emergency services personnel; 2) developing and enforcing standing operating procedures (SOPs) and policies related to fire and emergency services; and 3) performing firefighting activities, search and rescue, crash/rescue operations, responding to HAZMAT incidents, and responding to medical emergencies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Additional Qualifications: In order to receive consideration for this position, you must submit a copy of your Fire Officer IV Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, Hazardous Material Incident Command and Airport Firefighter Certifications. With the exception of the Hazardous Material Incident Command Certification, the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program shall recognize and accept certification certificates from any entity accredited by the IFSAC or the Pro-Board only when the DoD employee has satisfied the required prerequisite certification level(s). Employees who have completed IFSAC or Pro-Board accredited training programs may require DoD equivalent certifications under the reciprocity provision of the certification program. The certificates being submitted for Change 1, 09/16/2010 25 Chapter 4 DoD 6055-06-M, February 23, 2006 reciprocity must have the appropriate IFSAC or Pro-Board seal on them. The DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program shall not issue certification certificates for completing non-accredited training.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).

Special Retirement Provisions Authority: FERS Position covered as secondary under the FERS special retirement provisions for Federal firefighters [5 U.S.C. 8401(14), 5 U.S.C. 8412(d), and 5 CFR 842.802]. Position covered as secondary under the CSRS special retirement provisions for Federal firefighters [5 U.S.C. 8331(21), 5 U.S.C. 8336(c), and 5 CFR 831.902].
