Assisting in addressing technical and administrative questions arising in the course of planning and conducting Correctional Services reviews.

Responsible for knowing and using all policies, procedures, and practices in effect throughout the Bureau in the field of Correctional Services and is further responsible for making recommendations for correction of problems and finding solutions for difficult problems noted.

Reviews the various Bureau of Prison Correctional Services operations, participating in teams consisting of employees of the Correctional Services Section and other persons who augment the centralized review team on a review-by-review basis.

Responsible for preparing reports, position papers, and correspondence on a wide variety of correctional issues independently or at the request of high-level management persons.

Develops manuals and guidelines for the conduct of reviews or Bureau Correctional Services.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements:

Education:

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.

Experience:

You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is directly related experience that included substantial involvement with a correctional program and provided a thorough knowledge of correctional techniques, or experience in meeting and dealing with people that demonstrated the ability to work effectively with inmates and associates in a correctional environment.

Experience must have also demonstrated the ability to perform supervisory or administrative duties successfully. This includes (1) understanding the problems of custody, treatment, training, and release of inmates of penal or correctional institutions;(2) a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of an institution's internal policies, programs, regulations, and procedures; and (3) training subordinates, coordinating and directing activities and functions, evaluating performance of operations and the effectiveness of programs, and maintaining high standards or work objectives. This experience must have been gained in an administrative position, or in other positions that included the successful direction, or assistance in the direction of, an entire correctional program or a major phase of such a program.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

  • Experience identifying flaws in program areas, deficiencies in policy and operations issuances, and recommending solutions to critical problems.
  • Experience conducting and analyzing evaluations to determine program effectiveness and operational efficiency, test administrative and financial controls, assess compliance and policy and governing regulations.
  • Experience in providing expert advice in an area of correctional specialty, or to provide guidance, direction, supervision, advice and/or evaluation for a program or programs in correctional facilities.
  • Experience conducting field program reviews, identifying significant findings, and recognizing conditions in which improvements can be made.
  • Experience participating in a program review, regional staff assist visit, or operational review as a team member or reviewer-in-charge.
  • Completed training directly related to the management of the Correctional Services Department (Correctional Services Cross Development, Lieutenant’s Training, Captain’s Training).
  • Experience in the direct supervision of correctional staff (Operations Lieutenant, Captain)

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.
