JOB TITLE: GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
JOB SERIES: 1601 PAY LEVEL: NF-04
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Provides the technical expertise to maintain the golf course greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and irrigation system and all related facilities and equipment. Responsible to ensure the attractiveness and constant readiness for play of the course. Determines the appropriate genus of grass to be cultivated for various points of play on the course, based on the nature and condition of the soil, climate, and season of the year. Ensures the proper functioning of the irrigation systems across the field of play and determines the correct amount of water to be applied to the greens, tees and fairways and related facilities. Oversees and directs the grounds maintenance department who is responsible for irrigation, mowing, fertilization, pesticide application and general upkeep of the golf course grounds. Conducts site assessments to evaluate current environmental management practices, and identify strengths and liabilities. Trains employees regarding the importance of environmental performance and specific techniques for ensuring environmental quality. Directs the amount and types of soil nutriments and fertilizers to be applied to the greens, fairways and roughs. Takes soil samples regularly throughout the year and reads the results for necessary amendments. Responsible for the selection, application, storage, and otherwise safe handling of pesticides and other toxic substances. Ensures compliance with all base, county, state and federal hazardous waste regulations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Agronomy or related field and three years of experience OR equivalent combination of experience reflecting professional knowledge of golf course maintenance operations, to include turf management, the application of agronomy and horticulture sciences, as well as environmental stewardship.
- One year of leadership and supervisory experience to plan and motivate employees.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Pesticide Applicator Certification within one year of employment.
- Must be able to recognize turf damage from fungus and insects and apply fungicide, pesticide and germicides to correct problem areas.
- Must be able to calibrate sprayers and sprinklers so that the correct amount of materials or relief can be applied to designated areas.
- Must display talent in the art of landscaping, planting, and growing of turf characteristic to golf courses.
- Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
